Set a budget for a small app pilot

Tie spending to a useful question the pilot must answer.

Last materially reviewed 2026-09-18

Quick answerFund a bounded evaluation of one workflow, with a separate allowance for review and recovery.
What to know

Name the question before the cost allowance

A useful pilot asks something answerable: can two test users submit and review a fictional request without losing its history? It does not promise to launch an entire business. Define the evidence you need, the account access required and the tasks you will not test. If the product is unavailable to your account, resolve that before assuming a subscription purchase guarantees the desired evaluation path.

What to know

Split the total budget into distinct buckets

Separate the platform commitment, usage-based operations, outside services and human review. Include a small recovery allowance rather than spending everything on the initial generation. Mark amounts as proposed until authorized and observed only after confirmed charges. Free signup does not imply free generation. Check the current offer and terms before starting work that could consume credits or trigger another provider’s billing.

What to know

Use checkpoints tied to evidence

Choose a few meaningful checkpoints: the initial workflow appears, saved data survives a reload, and the important failure cases behave acceptably. At each one, record what was learned and what remains broken. More prompts are not automatically more progress. If the same essential task repeatedly fails, narrow the problem or seek technical review instead of expanding the brief and hoping a larger request resolves it.

What to know

Decide whether to stop or continue

Compare the observed outcome with the original question. A stopped pilot can be successful research if it reveals that the tool is unsuitable before a larger commitment. If the workflow works, estimate the next phase separately with its own consent and evidence requirements. Do not silently roll unused pilot budget into a paid launch or assume that an attractive prototype proves demand, security or a viable operating margin.

  • Keep the remaining recovery allowance visible when deciding whether to start another generation or connected-service action.
Continue when useful
