Compare the editing model

A visual configuration tool and a code-generating assistant can both reduce manual development, but they place different demands on the operator. One may expose a limited set of controls; another may produce code you need help understanding. Treat these as evaluation categories rather than universal descriptions of every vendor. Ask to see how a small change moves from a request into a testable result.

Test the same change on both paths

Use a fictional request form and change one rule: the requested delivery date must not be earlier than the submission date. Check the visible message, the saved record and an attempted invalid submission. Record which steps required specialist help. This produces a more meaningful comparison than counting templates or judging the attractiveness of an untouched example. Do not use real customer information for the exercise.

What to know

Compare maintenance cost and exit requirements

Find out who can inspect a broken rule six months later. Establish which configuration, source files and records you can export, and what a new maintainer would need. An export button is not proof of a complete recovery path. A restricted editor may be perfectly acceptable when the standard workflow fits; generated code may offer flexibility but still require technical review when behavior becomes complex.

Write three non-negotiable requirements and the evidence for each candidate. Mark an untested capability as unknown, not a pass. If both options meet the need, compare the cost of support and future changes. If neither does, reduce scope or seek a developer-supported route.
