Side-by-side comparison

Overskill vs Base44: who owns the working backend?

Last materially reviewed 2026-09-18

Quick answerCompare the complete saved-record workflow and its exit route, not just how quickly a screen appears.
Put this comparison to work

✓ You have one specific app workflow to assess.

✓ You want a documentation-led shortlist, not an invented benchmark.

What this does not establish

— A claim that either product has passed our hands-on tests.

— An assurance about your account, plan limits or production security.

What to know

The decision: convenience now, recoverability later

Base44’s official feature page groups database management, authentication, storage, email and payment integration inside one product. Overskill also presents a connected app-building workflow. That makes backend responsibility a useful comparison: which parts are managed for you, and which parts would you need to reconstruct if you left? This is a documentation comparison, not a benchmark. We have not built the same application in either service, and a feature label is not proof that your particular permission or recovery case works.

What to know

Compare the same request-tracker workflow

Consider a small maintenance-request app: a customer submits a request, a staff member changes its status, and the customer sees only their own records. Write those three outcomes before opening a builder. Ask each product to explain where records live and how identity is linked to ownership. In a later authorized trial, check a second customer, an expired session and a failed attachment upload. A polished administrator screen does not answer whether the customer boundary holds. Keep that distinction in your notes.

What to know

Separate code integration from a complete exit

Base44 lists GitHub integration and version control. Those are useful capabilities to investigate, but they do not by themselves establish a portable copy of customer records, uploaded files, identity settings and private configuration. Overskill’s export documentation is another starting point, not proof that restoration elsewhere is complete. Make an inventory with five rows: code, records, files, identity and configuration. For every row, request the supported export and restoration route. An unanswered row is a dependency to price and investigate, not an automatic disqualification.

What to know

Which should make your shortlist?

Investigate Base44 first if your main requirement is a small managed business workflow and you want to assess its bundled backend components together. Keep Overskill in the comparison if its documented workflow fits the same brief and you can obtain actual account access. Overskill’s waitlist link is not instant access. Before paying either provider, compare the required plan, ongoing service usage, maintenance responsibility and what happens when a change fails. If you cannot identify who can restore the records, narrow the pilot rather than expanding the app.

Source boundary

What this comparison can—and cannot—settle

This guide draws on Overskill product page, Overskill table-export documentation, Base44 official features — merchant claims, not a benchmark. Merchant-controlled records describe the provider’s own capabilities, terms or standards; they do not independently validate those claims. Other cited records provide additional context. A different publisher or a research, regulatory or certification label does not by itself establish independence, relevance or product validation.

Verify any current price, plan limit, label direction, compatibility rule, or commercial term that would materially change the decision. The dated source ledger shows the underlying records so this conclusion can be checked and updated.
