Practical guide

First project: a small public directory

Plan useful records, filtering and an editorial maintenance process.

Quick answerStart with a curated set of public information and one useful filter, not a marketplace with accounts and payments.
What to know

Define why the directory should exist

Pick a narrow decision the directory helps somebody make. A list of local workshop spaces could distinguish accessibility information, opening arrangements and equipment rather than merely repeat names. Use information you have permission to publish and record its source. Do not import personal contact details or scrape restricted records simply because a generated table makes bulk collection look easy. The editorial selection is part of the product.

What to know

Make a consistent record template

Choose fields that support the decision and can be checked consistently. A record might need a name, official link, short description, location category and last-reviewed date. Distinguish an unknown field from a confirmed negative. Keep source notes separate from promotional copy. If you cannot maintain a field reliably, remove it from the initial scope instead of filling gaps with plausible guesses or stale search snippets.

What to know

Test one filter and its empty state

Use fictional entries while building and give them deliberately varied values. Check a filter that matches several records, one that matches none and a reset back to all records. Ensure the empty state explains how to broaden the search. Confirm that links and long names work on mobile. This proposed scenario can be used to evaluate Overskill or another builder; it is not a report of a completed build.

What to know

Plan maintenance before adding submissions

A directory becomes less useful when records quietly go stale. Decide who reviews corrections, how review dates change and how unsupported claims are handled. Defer public submissions, ratings and paid placement until there is a reason to accept their extra moderation burden. An existing content tool may be sufficient for the first version. Choose a custom application only when its interaction adds useful value beyond the curated information itself.

Continue when useful
